Abstract

BSTRACT This study examines the effects of direct and indirect organizational demographic (the proxies are four variables including: gender, age, ethnicity, and tenure), characteristics of directors (the proxies are: the size and foreign directors), and company characteristics (the proxies are: age and size of the company). Indirect effects will be tested based on accounting performance. This research is using sample from 90 manufacturing companies registered at Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during year of 2012-2016. The testing of direct and indirect effects is using smartPLS 3.00 program. And it also conducted Sobel test to find out independent variable that have the most powerful affect towards market performance (Tobin's Q) which is mediated by accounting performance. The findings of this study indicate organizational demographics namely gender and ethnicity do not support accounting performance (ROE). Age of directors have positive effects meanwhile tenure of directors have negative effects and ethnicity has no effects. While organizational demographies on market performance (Tobin’s Q). It is proven that variables such gender and age show positive effect, in contrary ethnicity and tenure negative effect. Characteristics of directors, specifically the number of directors signals positive effect on accounting performance. But foreign directors has negative effect. Other outcome shows that towards market performance (Tobin's Q) the variables of foreign directors and the number of directors have positive influence. Examination on company’s characteristics reveals that age and size of the company have no effect on accounting performance. However age of the company has positive effect and size of the company has negative effect towards market performance. Accounting performance is proven to mediate some relations of gender, age of directors, number of directors, foreign directors, and director’s age towards market performance. While ethnicity, tenure, and size of the company have negative effect. Sobel test has proven the strongest variables that have strong influence are number of directors and foreign directors, while the tenure of directors had a negative effect.
