Abstract

ABSTRACT Endi Sarwoko, Doctorate Program in Management Science, Economics and Business Faculty Brawijaya University, January 22th 2013. Entrepreneurial Characteristics, Entrepreneurial Competency, and Strategies as Determinant of Business Performance (Studi on SMEs in Malang regency). Promotor: Surachman, Co-promotors: Armanu, and Djumilah Hadiwidjojo. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have a strategic role for the Indonesian economy because capable of absorbing labor, and the establishment of the gross domestic product. Although SMEs have a strategic role but his success rate is still low, so as to know the factors that determine the success of SMEs. The objective of this research is to analyze the characteristics of entrepreneur influence on business performance, to analyze the characteristics of entrepreneur influence on business performance that is mediated by competence, to analyze the characteristics entrepreneur influence on business performance that is mediated by strategy, and to analyze the entrepreneurial competencies influence on business performance that is mediated by strategy. The sample used 147 owners of SMEs in Malang region, taken with a Proportional Random Sampling techniques. The technique of data collection using the questionnaire, and techniques of data analysis using the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results showed that the characteristics of entrepreneur drive behavior through the creation of entrepreneurial competencies of SMEs owners. Next business performance is determined of entrepreneurial competencies. Entrepreneurial competencies are also capable of enhancing the implementation of the strategy for business growth, capacity implementation strategies that determine the business performance. So an entrepreneur without having the entrepreneurial competencies won't be able to strengthen the implementation of the business strategy and will not be able to achieve business performance.
